Our impact
Spectris Foundation Employee Nominated Grant Impact
The grant enabled nine mathematics teachers, from rural primary and junior middle schools, to participate in a summer camp program this year. Many teachers in rural areas of China have had to use the same resources for decades and don’t get opportunities for training, so the teachers were thrilled to develop their skills and knowledge through the camp which covered topics such as AI generated content and its applications in education, adolescent mental health and action planning. The teachers’ wellbeing was also supported through topics such as mindfulness, self-awareness and coaching dialogues.
Matchsticks NGO also ran two camps for principals of rural schools, and as well as supporting camp activities, volunteers from Spectris businesses in Shanghai added significant value to the £5,000 grant by hosting an interactive laboratory visit for 30 principals.
The principals were offered a chance to see inside modern laboratories, where they were hugely impressed by the inspiring application of technology. They engaged in lively discussions with our product and application experts about the future of rural education, particularly in STEM fields. Key managers from the Spectris businesses also interacted with the principals, providing insights on topics such as sustainability, STEM education, business operations, and workplace culture. Additionally, two employees based in Shanghai, who originally came from rural areas, were invited to share their personal stories of career growth and development.
By the end of the visit, the principals expressed their deep appreciation for Spectris’ commitment to cutting-edge technology.
The Spectris Foundation and Spectris China are delighted to have been able to support the important work of Matchsticks NGO in equipping rural teachers in China. By empowering these dedicated educators, our charitable collaboration is contributing to students in underserved locations having access to quality education that prepares them for future success.
Thank you to everyone involved!

Celebrating youth voices in inclusive STEM education
This innovative podcast, produced in collaboration with Inclusive Change at Work CIC, brings the voices of disabled and neurodivergent young people to the forefront of STEM conversations. The podcast aims to create an inclusive space where young people who, as described by one attendee, can often feel like “square pegs in round holes” can connect through their shared experiences and love of STEM. Each episode features discussions on STEM topics that are personally meaningful to the young hosts, often including conversations with people who inspire them.
One of the brilliant aspects of the podcast is that it is entirely youth-driven, from branding decisions to content creation and hosting.
The project has been met with whole-hearted enthusiasm from its young participants. One described it as “a phenomenal experience,” while another expressed eagerness to participate again.
As part of the launch, we were treated to a very engaging practical demonstration called ‘Physics in the freezer’. One of the young people who is a podcast participant, and who got involved in the Lightyear Foundation after her recent cancer treatment, led the session with a Science teacher. She explained the impact the podcast project has had on her, describing it as an “incredible experience”. We all enjoyed watching their experiments with liquid nitrogen, balloons and blu-tack! It felt like we could have been at a magic show, but we were reminded that it’s not magic, it’s science!
It was clear from the launch that the podcast has cultivated a passion for STEM among its contributors and highlighted the importance of inclusion in these fields.
You can check out the podcast showreel here and you can access the podcast on major platforms including Apple, Spotify and YouTube as well as here.
Thank you, Lightyear Foundation, for your ground-breaking work in ensuring that STEM education is more inclusive!
The Spectris Foundation was delighted to participate in the recent launch event for Squar3roots, a new youth-led STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) podcast from our charity partner, the Lightyear Foundation.Read more
Employee Nominated Grant Impact – Boulder Emergency Squad
Last year, we received a nomination from Scott MacLaughlin, from Particle Measuring Systems, which highlighted the proactive efforts of the Boulder Emergency Squad (BES) to increase the number of members certified in wildland firefighting in response to the rising threat of wildland fires in Colorado.
The Spectris Foundation awarded a grant of £5,000 which enabled BES to equip five women, who had recently become certified wildland firefighters, with appropriate safety clothing. This is particularly significant as historically only men’s safety gear had been provided which was ill-fitting, uncomfortable, and less protective for women. The grant covered the costs of fire-proof shirts, trousers, boots, and helmets – all especially designed for women – along with backpacks and other personal protective equipment to ensure their safety while bravely battling wildfires.
We are proud to support initiatives that not only address immediate challenges but also pave the way for a more inclusive and resilient future. Together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and communities affected by wildland fires in Colorado. Thank you to the Boulder Emergency Squad for all the hard work you do in making the community a safer place!
We look forward to sharing more employee nominated grant stories throughout this year.

Spectris Foundation presentation afternoon and 2023 recap
On the 1st December we invited our STEM charities, Spectris employees, and the Foundation’s board to hear from a selection of our STEM partnerships to celebrate two incredible years since The Spectris Foundation distributed its very first grant. Technovation, Lightyear Foundation, ENTHUSE Charitable Trust and Apps for Good gave an insight to their organisations and how they’ve been using the foundation’s funding. Almost 200 people from around the world attended and was an inspiring afternoon which brought our foundation’s mission to life!
The Spectris Foundation’s mission to engineer bright futures by giving access to quality STEM education globally. In the UK, only 31% of core STEM subjects are studied by women or non-binary students, and our government acknowledges women, certain ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds are underrepresented in STEM education. There are many obstacles, including a rapid decline in teachers remaining in the profession – with nearly half of all newly qualified teachers leaving within the first five years.
The Spectris Foundation recognises the need for quality STEM education far exceeds the UK, and that is why we fund global programs and work with specialist charitable partners who can make our mission a reality.
Over the past two years, the foundation has awarded £1.3 million pounds to 69 charities globally. Committing £1.1 million to STEM education. This year, we have awarded 7 STEM grants to new and existing partners. We are grateful to our charitable partners who are working to make our mission a reality, to find out more click here.
Aside from our primary mission in supporting access to STEM Education, at the heart of the Foundation’s philanthropic endeavor is an approach that empowers Spectris Group employees to champion causes that are close to their hearts. Grants of up to £5,000 are awarded to a diverse range of initiatives across the globe, highlighting the companies global reach and dedication towards making a positive impact on our world.
In 2023, we have proudly awarded 23 grants, totaling to £91,000 in the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and China. Our hope is these small grants are impactful for the charities and the employees who have nominated them, and are another way our foundation is trying to contribute towards improving our world.
Thank you for everyone who has been involved with The Spectris Foundation this year! We look forward to another exciting year!
2023 has been a fundamental year for The Spectris Foundation; we have established long-term STEM partnerships, participated in STEM learning activities globally and continued to support employees through nominations, worldwide.Read more
India STEM Foundation
The Spectris Foundation is funding the Tinkering Lab at The Bharat English School and Junior College in Pune. A science classroom which provides students the opportunity to learn hands-on science and technology in their school and for surrounding schools.
In November, the foundation’s Chair, Derek Harding has the privilege of visiting the school where he met with the students and teachers to learn about their experiences and see firsthand the impact of the India Stem Foundation.
“I recently had the privilege to visit the Bharat English School and Junior College in Pune, India. I had the opportunity to meet the children and teachers who are being supporting by a partnership between the Spectris Foundation and the India Stem Foundation, through the creation of a “STEM TINKERING LAB”. For many of the children, the tinkering lab is the first opportunity that they have to engage with Science and Technology and it was an extremely moving experience to see their enthusiasm and excitement. The Spectris Foundation was established to champion equal opportunities for those with a passion for technology and a desire to engineer a better world. The teachers and children in Pune are the living embodiment of this purpose” – Derek Harding.

7 STEM Grants awarded in 2023!
We are proud to have awarded a further seven STEM grants this year! We are committing to support charities for up to three years and are continuing to nourish our partnerships worldwide.
The Spectris Foundation are delighted to announce that we have awarded over £700,000 of STEM funding to 7 charitable partners.
We are extending our fantastic partnerships with Technovation, African Gifted Foundation, Engineering Education Scheme Wales, and the SAE Foundation. We aim to build on the brilliant work that has been achieved and hope to make impactful change in STEM Education internationally.
In additional, we have formed exciting new partnerships with the Lightyear Foundation and Apps for Good. Both are UK charities which are using real life solutions and technology to address the gap in STEM education for people living with a disability, with special educational needs, or within areas of deprivation.
Many of our charitable partners rely on volunteers to design programs, mentor and inspire students. In addition to funding, The Spectris Foundation plans to enhance these grants by coordinating volunteering opportunities with Spectris’s talented employees. By working together and pulling on professional experience, we will engineer bright futures.
Thank you to our charity partners, we are excited to be working alongside you!
