Engineering Education Scheme Wales Ltd /STEM Cymru have been a foundation charitable partner since September 2022. They work across Wales, providing students with the opportunity to gain practical experience by working with industries, businesses and higher education. One of their flagship programmes is providing school children with the opportunity to take part in the F1 in Schools Competition where students design, race and make a model F1 car.
This year, the F1 in Schools South Wales Regional Finals 2025 was held in Cardiff, and Hugo Maule, Group Head of STEM at Spectris plc, volunteered to be one of the judges at the primary school finals day. School teams competed with their model cars on the track and presented their design process to the judges.
Hugo said:
“I was so impressed at the creativity shown by the teams in their entries and presentations, using physical models, videos and even live rap to communicate their design process! It truly provided inspiration not to lose that uninhibited youthful creativity once we get to our professional careers. I’m so glad I had this opportunity; it was a hugely enjoyable experience.”
The Spectris Foundation is working with Engineering Education Scheme Wales to help them reach some of Wales most underserved communities, to give all students the opportunity to gain quality STEM Education. The F1 in Schools competition is an exciting way for students to develop their STEM skills as it combines physics, design, financial planning and manufacturing with leadership teamwork and presentation skills. The volunteer judges play a vital role in encouraging and motivating the students in STEM.
Thank you, Hugo, for bringing your expertise to the judging panel, and for helping Engineering Education Scheme Wales inspire our next generation!
