ASE’s “Keeping Science Practical” programme stands out as a beacon for addressing disparities in practical science education. We have chosen to support ASE because of its deep, systemic approach—one that targets not only students, but also the teachers and technicians who shape their learning environments. This programme is designed to upskill science leaders, early-career teachers, and technicians in secondary schools located in areas of socio-economic deprivation, where the decline in practical science opportunities has been most severe.
The anticipated outcomes are substantial: schools and science departments will be better equipped and more confident to deliver meaningful practical lessons, reversing a trend of decline in hands-on science. This, in turn, leads to more students—especially those in under-resourced schools—having opportunities to engage in practical science. The programme builds on the success of a previous four-year initiative funded by the Wolfson Foundation, which evidenced significant impact; our support ensures this legacy not only continues, but grows.
Moreover, ASE’s approach to impact measurement is rigorous, utilizing Guskey’s Five Levels of Professional Development Evaluation to track outcomes for teachers and students alike. By investing in ASE, we are investing in sustainable, systemic change that reaches across classrooms, schools, and communities.
